Abstract

This literature study examines the relationship between microfinance programs and social welfare in poor communities through a systematic review of academic publications from 2005 to 2015. Using a qualitative literature review approach, the study synthesizes findings from various empirical studies to identify patterns of impact across multiple dimensions of social welfare, including economic outcomes, social capital, psychological well-being, and institutional access. The analysis reveals that microfinance can contribute positively to income generation and asset accumulation, particularly for recipients with adequate individual capacity and access to productive opportunities. Social and psychological dimensions show significant benefits through strengthened social networks, women's empowerment, and enhanced self-confidence, though risks of social pressure and psychological stress also emerge. Key mediating factors include individual capacity, social capital, and information access, while moderating factors encompass program characteristics, gender relations, and community conditions. Programs integrating financial services with mentoring, training, and other non-financial services demonstrate greater effectiveness compared to credit-only approaches. The study concludes that microfinance effectiveness depends substantially on program design aligned with recipient characteristics and local conditions. These findings have important implications for program design, evaluation methods, and policy development in microfinance for social welfare improvement.
